Meeting Marika Day of Fit Food and Soul is like a breath of fresh air in what can be a very superficial influencer industry. A woman who is making waves in the health and fitness industry by being honest, authentic and genuinely has a passion for wanting to help woman make positive changes to their lives, is exactly how you would describe her.
Talking to her about the woman that she trains makes her light up with pride, and the passion she demonstrates for what she does is incredible. And for this reason, along with how much of a bloody gem she is inside and out, and her resume ( Bachelor Health Sciences (Nutrition), Masters Dietetics Studies, Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), Qualified Personal Trainer
Certificate III + IV Fitness), I think this lady with her social media following of over 30,000 is another prime candidate for the title of #Girlboss.
What kick started your career in the health and fitness industry, and what is your background?
Oh good question! I never thought i'd be in the health and fitness industry. I wasn't a very fit or healthy teenager!! I started getting into it after I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease when I was 18 and I started noticing the effect that eating better and starting to move my body was having on me mentally and physically. I couldn't believe that in hindsight such simple changes over a long period of time could change my life. I guess then I just wanted to share that with anyone and everyone. Plus I was then finally well enough to actually go to university and study! My parents are also in the health and medical industry and my mum is a dietitian too so I guess being around them and knowing what they do gave me a little bit of a background into the industry.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love that I get to be surrounded by amazing people, I love that I get to improve their lives and help them feel better and I love that I get to be on my feet and relatively active during the day!
What advice would you give to someone who is wanting to follow in your footsteps, and create a career in the health and fitness industry?
Get qualified! haha there are so many people in the industry who haven't got the qualifications to back up what they are doing. You don't go to a lawyer or doctor who isn't qualified why would you get health and fitness advice from someone who isn't qualified.
How did you develop your Instagram following to over 30k?
I will be honest, in the early days I spent a lot of time on it haha! I wasn't loving the work I was doing so every spare second I was on there replying to every comment, liking photos of similar accounts and just trying to engage as much as possible with my audience. Also collaborating with others on instagram was a big step in growing.
What do you get asked most from those wanting to make healthy changes?
Probably how to stay motivated. The biggest thing with motivation is that it doesn't last and I think people forget that that is normal. Motivation isn't meant to last, that's why it's so important to make changes habit, so you could barely imagine life without doing it. Think about brushing your teeth, do you need motivation to do that? No - why? Because it is a habit, it is just what you do and you have a good reason WHY. Most people brush their teeth because they know it is good for them. Why not start thinking of exercise as the same?
What advice would you give to someone who is wanting to make healthy changes in 2017?
Take it one step at a time and have a really good reason why you are making the change. Habit changes aren't easy and if you want them to last, the best thing you can do is take it slowly! Don't try to overhaul your life overnight. Each week pick on thing to change and over the year you will have made 52 changes! How amazing is that.
Where do you want to take Fit Food and Soul in the future?
Ahh I have such big plans that if I were to share with you, you'd probably think I was insane haha! For now though I am growing my girls boot camp which is an amazing group of girls making healthy habit changes and having fun working out. Who knows what is to come in the future, you'll just have to stay tuned.
