Tattoo Removal: What's it really like?
Everyone makes stupid decisions when they are 18. It's just a fact. Drinking too much in front of Grandma at Christmas. Going out the night before a uni exam and harbouring a hangover that makes you want to die. Spending your rent money on that new dress because you might see your crush on the weekend. We aren't smart at this stage. Also fact.
One of mine was in the form of a tattoo on my ribs that was done by some dodgy looking "family friend" of my partner at the time. Would have much preferred the hangover! So when the chance came up to get that bad boy removed, I leaped at it!
The Picosure laser tattoo removal system by Cynosure is what I had the chance to try at Westside Dermatology, and over the period of a year, I had treatments generally 6-8 weeks to have my tattoo removed, and it's nearly completely gone. Check out these before and after shots!
Now I know what you're thinking, what did it feel like? The first session really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was over in about 30 seconds because the laser isn't so concentrated and just covers a general area. It's the later sessions when the ink has started to fade and break down more, so it becomes a finer target area and longer sessions that definitely
The nurses at Westside Dermatology were great in making sure I felt comfortable during the session and helped to ice the area.. but let's be honest, this process doesn't tickle! But it does work, and up to 80% faster than older systems. Take a look.
How does it work?
The laser is shattering the ink in your skin so that it's absorbed into your system, and processed like a toxin, which causes the ink to continue to fade over the next 6-8 weeks. And that's when you go in for another session. I sometimes chickened out a couple of times and delayed appointments; although the laser is much faster than older systems, and there is the aid of high pressure cold air, there is still a level of pain that must be expected. And quite a high one; you're getting ink burned out of your skin, let's be honest!
This is the aftermath of a session about 24 hours post treatment, and you can see the bottom is quite blistered. But surprisingly, it wasn't painful afterwards, and this looks so much worse than it feels. I could still wear a bra and shower, which I was thinking would be a nightmare. Not the case.
I still have at least one more session to go, but you can already see the difference in how visible it is. With time and the right care, the scaring will reduce and this "18 year old me" mistake will be in the past. I feel so much more comfortable already and more confident not having it on my side. Bring on bikini season!
I would like to say a HUGE thank you to the nurses at Westside Dermatology for their amazing service and helping me along the way. And also a thank you very much to Platinum Media and Communications for helping to arrange this experience for me and all their help along this journey.
